Fiverr's active buyers fell 25.8% in a year. What should freelance designers do now?

Short answer
Fiverr had 2.4 million annual active buyers on 30 September 2026, down 25.8% in a year, and the decline has deepened every quarter since late 2025. Fiverr expects AI-driven discovery to cut marketplace traffic further through 2027. Freelance designers should keep their Fiverr profile but build a second channel they own: a named niche, a portfolio site that answers buyer questions, and visibility in AI answers.
How fast is Fiverr's buyer base shrinking?
Fiverr published its third-quarter 2026 results on 29 October 2026. Annual active buyers fell to 2.4 million, down 25.8% from 3.3 million a year earlier. And the rate of decline has grown every quarter:
| Quarter end | Change in annual active buyers, year over year |
|---|---|
| 31 December 2025 | Down 13.6% |
| 31 March 2026 | Down 17.8% |
| 30 June 2026 | Down 21.9% |
| 30 September 2026 | Down 25.8% |
The metric counts buyers who ordered at least one Gig in the previous 12 months. So it describes a smaller pool of active buyers, not people deleting their accounts.
One caution about the headline figures. Fiverr rounds them to one decimal place. Its own tables show 2,676,000 buyers at the end of June and 2,447,000 at the end of September. The real drop over the quarter was 229,000, not the 300,000 you get by subtracting the rounded 2.4 million from 2.7 million.
Why isn't higher spend per buyer enough?
Annual spend per buyer rose 12.9%, from $330 to $373. But marketplace revenue fell 24.7% year over year, to $55.4 million. The buyers who remain spend a little more on average, nowhere near enough to make up for a quarter of buyers going missing.
The company as a whole did better than its forecast. Fiverr says revenue beat its previous guidance and it raised its 2026 outlook. It credits mainly AutoDS and e-commerce, plus tight cost control. Its services revenue grew 3.4%, to $35.5 million. The marketplace, where freelancers sell, is the part that is still shrinking.
What does Fiverr say is causing it?
Fiverr is direct about it. Its shareholder letter says "AI continues to compress low-value, transactional work". It says changes in search traffic are hurting "both low-value and high-end work", so moving upmarket does not solve the problem of getting buyers onto the platform. And it expects the shift from search to AI-driven discovery to cause a steeper fall in marketplace traffic than it expected, through 2027.
Fiverr is responding with Mira, an AI headhunter, and with public APIs and integrations inside Claude and ChatGPT. Whether that works is Fiverr's question. Yours is how much of your income depends on it.
A disclosure: Theepa also sells on Fiverr, so this affects us too.
What should freelance designers do now?
This is our advice, not Fiverr's. Do not delete your profile. Add a channel you own.
- 1Measure your dependence. Work out what share of last year's income came through Fiverr.
- 2Pick a niche you can name. "Brand identity for clinics in the Gulf" is easier to find and recommend than "logo designer".
- 3Package outcomes, not hours. A clear scope and a fixed list of deliverables is easier to buy on any platform.
- 4Build a small portfolio site. Five to eight pages: what you do, for whom, case studies, process, FAQ and contact.
- 5Answer buyer questions on it. One page or section per real question, with the answer first. That is what Google and AI tools can quote.
- 6Check your AI visibility. Ask ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google for your niche and city, and note who gets named.
- 7Stay close to past clients. Repeat work and referrals do not depend on anyone's search traffic.

Worked example: a logo designer who gets most orders from Fiverr
This is a hypothetical scenario, not a real seller. A freelance logo designer gets most of her orders through Fiverr, and orders have slowed this year. She gives herself 90 days.
- 1Days 1 to 15: numbers and niche. She calculates her Fiverr share of income and picks one niche she already has work for: restaurants and cafes in the UAE. She rewrites her gigs into three clear packages.
- 2Days 16 to 45: the site. She builds a six-page site with three case studies and four question pages, such as "What files should a restaurant get with its logo?"
- 3Days 46 to 75: people. She emails past clients with a short update, asks happy clients for permission to quote them, and runs her niche questions through ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google once a month.
- 4Days 76 to 90: review. She logs where every enquiry came from and puts more time into the channel that worked.
Fiverr stays one channel among several, not the only door.
