Brand identity vs logo: what's the difference, and which do you need?

Short answer
A logo is a single mark that identifies your company. A brand identity is the full system around it: logo variations, colour, typography, imagery, voice and the rules for using them. If you only need a mark for a side project, a logo is enough. If customers, investors or hires will judge you on how you look, you need an identity.
What is a logo?
A logo is the mark people use to recognise you: a symbol, a wordmark, or both. A good logo is simple enough to work at favicon size and distinctive enough to own.
On its own, though, a logo can't tell anyone how your website should look, which colour to use on a button, or how a pitch deck slide should be laid out. That's where most companies get stuck.
What is a brand identity?
A brand identity is the system that makes everything you publish look like it came from the same company. It usually includes:
- Logo system: primary logo, secondary versions, a compact mark and clear-space rules
- Colour: a primary palette, supporting colours and how much of each to use
- Typography: one or two typefaces and the sizes and weights for headings and body text
- Imagery and graphic elements: photography style, patterns, icons, illustration rules
- Voice: how the brand sounds, with examples of what to say and what to avoid
- Guidelines and templates: the rules written down, plus social, deck and document templates
Brand identity vs logo: side by side
| Logo | Brand identity | |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | One mark | A complete visual and verbal system |
| Answers | "Who is this?" | "Who is this, and why should I trust them?" |
| Works on | Signage, favicon, profile picture | Website, product, deck, social, packaging, hiring |
| Team can extend it | Not really | Yes, with guidelines and templates |
| Best for | Side projects, very early tests | Companies selling, raising or hiring |
Which one do you need?
You probably only need a logo if you are testing an idea, the audience is small and forgiving, and nothing important depends on looking established yet.
You need a brand identity if any of these are true:
- You are about to raise money and investors will see your deck and website
- You sell to businesses whose buyers compare you with bigger competitors
- Several people (or tools) create content for you and it already looks inconsistent
- You are launching a product, a location or a new market
What does the process look like?
At Theepa Studio a brand identity starts with a short brief and positioning, then distinct first concepts presented early. One direction is refined into the full system and handed over with guidelines and templates. The Branding package takes 7–10 days. You can see what's included on the pricing page and real examples in our case studies.
