How to get your company recommended by ChatGPT, Claude and Perplexity

By Bilal Haider, Founder, Theepa Studio · · 3 min read

Short answer

AI assistants recommend companies they can find, understand and quote. Publish pages that directly answer the questions buyers ask (especially comparisons and "best X for Y" use cases), make them crawlable by AI bots, add structured data, keep your company description consistent everywhere, and earn mentions on other sites. Then check what assistants say about you every month.

How AI recommendations work, simply

When someone asks an assistant "what's a good branding studio for a SaaS startup?", it answers from what it has read and, increasingly, from a live web search. Your goal is to be the clearest, most quotable answer to that question on the pages it reads.

That's generative engine optimisation (GEO). It overlaps with SEO and AEO but puts more weight on being named and recommended, not just ranked.

1. Write the pages people ask AI about

The biggest wins come from content that matches how people phrase questions to an assistant:

  • Comparisons: "X vs Y", "agency vs freelancer", "Framer vs Webflow"
  • Alternatives: "alternative to [category or tool] for [use case]"
  • Use cases: "branding for SaaS startups", "website for a cafe"
  • Direct questions: "how long does a brand identity take?"

Start each page with a short, complete answer, then go deeper. Assistants often quote the first clear paragraph.

2. Make your site easy for AI to read

  • Allow AI crawlers such as GPTBot, ClaudeBot and PerplexityBot in robots.txt (unless you have a reason not to)
  • Serve real HTML text, not text baked into images or hidden behind scripts
  • Add structured data: Organization, Service, FAQPage, Article, BreadcrumbList
  • Publish an llms.txt file summarising who you are and your key pages; it's an emerging convention, not a guarantee, but it's cheap
  • Keep a complete, up-to-date sitemap

3. Be consistent about who you are

Use the same one-sentence description of your company on your site, LinkedIn, directories and marketplace profiles. Mismatched descriptions make it harder for models to connect the dots.

4. Get mentioned elsewhere

Assistants trust what others say about you: reviews, interviews, directory listings, partner pages and community discussions. Case studies with named clients help too.

5. Measure it

  • Ask several assistants the questions your buyers ask, monthly, and note whether you're named
  • Track referrals from AI tools in your analytics
  • Ask new leads how they found you; "ChatGPT told me" is now a real answer

What not to do

Don't publish thin pages stuffed with keywords, fake reviews or invented statistics. They can backfire with both search engines and AI systems, and they damage trust with the people who do read them.

This site follows the same playbook. If you'd like it done for your company, see our SEO, AEO and GEO service.

Questions people also ask

What is GEO?

Generative engine optimisation: making your company easy for AI assistants like ChatGPT, Claude and Perplexity to find, understand and recommend.

Is GEO different from SEO?

It overlaps. SEO focuses on ranking in search results; GEO focuses on being named and quoted inside AI answers. Good GEO content usually helps SEO too.

Does llms.txt make ChatGPT recommend me?

Not on its own. It's an emerging convention that some tools read. Clear, answer-first content and mentions on other sites matter far more.
